What is phylogeny?
A phylogeny is a diagram that depicts the evolution of a gene or genome using what is called a tree. The tree consists of multiple branches, and when a branch splits, a speciation event occurs. We can trace all the branches back to a singular organism on a tree called the last unknown common ancestor. It is from the last unknown common ancestor the different genes or genomes evolve from. Phylogenies hypothesize the ancestry of organisms and there are many different algorithms that analyze the phylogenetic relationships between organisms.
Discussion
This phylogeny tree constructed in Mega using FASTA sequences shows that the dogs are the closest relatives to humans in regards to HCRT. Zebrafish are also the farthest relative.
